Expert Advisors and VPS on Exness
An Expert Advisor (EA) is a program that runs inside MT4 or MT5 and trades by rules set in advance. A VPS is a remote computer that can keep the platform running. This page explains how both work on Exness.
An EA automates trading and does not remove the risk of loss. Exness advises understanding the strategy and checking thoroughly before use. Details come from Exness help center articles (checked 2026-10-13) and can change.

Is an EA a way to make money automatically?

No. An EA follows preset trading rules without manual action. It does not guarantee a profit. Exness advises understanding the strategy and checking thoroughly before use; losses remain possible.
What an EA is and where it runs

Can I run an EA on my phone?

No. EAs run only in the MT4 and MT5 desktop terminals, not in the mobile or browser versions. An EA written for MT4 does not work on MT5, and one written for MT5 does not work on MT4.
- An EA runs inside the platform and, following conditions set in advance, watches the market and carries out trading actions without manual operation.
- EAs are written in MQL4 for MT4 and MQL5 for MT5. The two are not interchangeable. See MT4 and MT5 on Exness.
- The Exness Trade app and the mobile versions of MT4 and MT5 have no automated trading.
- The EAs preinstalled in MT4 and MT5 are all made by MetaQuotes. MT4 has MACD Sample and Moving Average. MT5 has ExpertMACD, ExpertMAMA, ExpertMAPSAR and ExpertMAPSARSizeOptimized.

Installing an EA
- Get the EA from the MQL Community, which is MetaTrader's official source. You can also choose an EA in the Code Base tab of the terminal and download it directly.
- In the terminal, choose File, then Open Data Folder. Copy the EA file into the Experts folder inside MQL4 or MQL5, then restart the terminal.
- Choose Tools, then Options, then Expert Advisors, and tick Allow algorithmic trading.
- Drag the EA from the Navigator onto a chart.
- If the EA needs a library (.dll) or a settings file (.set), copy them into the Libraries and Settings folders inside MQL4 or MQL5.
- Tick Allow DLL imports and Allow WebRequest for listed URL only if the EA needs a .dll function or a connection to a specific URL. The requirements differ by EA, so check what the EA asks for before you change these settings.
Demo accounts use virtual funds. See the demo account page for how they work. Source: Using Expert Advisors (EA) (checked 2026-10-13).
When an EA is disabled or blocked
- Reasons Exness names for a disabled EA. The balance of the trading account is below the minimum requirement, or the EA settings are so aggressive that the terminal sends excessive or unrelated requests.
- If you cannot enable it by hand. Open a ticket in the Support Hub and ask for the EA to be enabled again.
- Volume limits. If an EA tries to send an order above the limit for an instrument or account type, MetaTrader shows an Invalid trade volume error. See the lot limits page.

The Exness VPS

Is the Exness VPS really free?

It costs nothing, but you must meet a balance or trading volume condition, or both. The amount can differ from person to person, so check the Virtual Private Server tab under Exness benefits in your Personal Area.
- The VPS is a virtual environment with MT4 and MT5 already installed. When you apply, you choose the number of terminals, the operating system language and the VPS server location. The number of terminals and the language can only be changed by reinstalling the VPS.
- The VPS is placed near the Exness trading servers. An EA can keep trading while your computer is off, and your own internet quality does not affect it.
- You can use a VPS of your own to trade on Exness servers, but Exness cannot guarantee the connection quality.
- Responsibility. Exness monitors that the MT servers are running. You are responsible for how your MT terminal behaves, including its connection to the server, restarts and whether the EA is running. Exness is not liable for losses caused by an EA on the VPS, including one installed by mistake or with support's help.

Conditions to get and keep a VPS
- How volume is counted. It is tracked in lots and calculated in USD. Each order counts twice, when it opens and when it closes, with the contract size added each time. Exness's example is 1 lot of USDJPY: 100,000 USD when opened and 200,000 USD in total once closed.
- What counts. Only orders on real accounts. Demo accounts, pending orders, and social trading or portfolio management accounts do not count.
- Keeping it. You must meet the required volume in one of the 30, 90 or 180 day periods. The 90 and 180 day periods become valid after that many days have passed. The required amounts are shown in the Personal Area.
- Using it. Within 5 days of being granted the VPS, log in from the VPS and trade with the linked trading account. You must also trade from the VPS at least once every 30 days, or the VPS ends even if the 90 or 180 day condition is met. Pending orders do not count as trading.
- If it ends. If the VPS ends because you do not meet its conditions, all data on it, including saved EAs, is deleted and cannot be restored. To use a VPS again, meet the volume condition and apply again.
- Terms of use. Use the VPS only for trading on Exness servers, and never in an illegal or inappropriate way. If you break the terms, you get a notice 24 hours before the VPS ends and your next application can be refused.
Trading only to meet a volume condition raises your exposure to losses, so do not size your trades around the VPS. Sources: About Exness VPS and Exness VPS: Setup guide (checked 2026-10-13).
Restarts and maintenance
- Restarting the VPS. While it restarts, you cannot place, modify or cancel orders in the trading platform on the VPS. Open positions stay open and EAs keep running.
- To avoid losing trading information after a restart, Exness suggests turning automated trading off before restarting and turning it on again afterwards, or monitoring the EA's running state.
- Maintenance. The VPS can become unavailable during maintenance. When maintenance is scheduled, especially if you run an EA or automated trading, Exness recommends closing your positions before the market closes on Friday.
Maintenance times for the trading servers are described on the server time page. Sources: About Exness VPS and Exness VPS: Terms of Use (checked 2026-10-13).
